The shining sun was no indication of the weather...yes, it seemed like a beautiful day AROUND the lake...but to the competitors of this year's Wildlands Challenge Adventure Race, it felt more like a day UNDER the lake.  With three too many days of torrential downpours in Berks County, Blue Marsh Lake has swelled beyond its banks and will continue to rise as long as The Army Corps of Engineers must protect surrounding areas from flooding by retaining water behind the dam.  While this is the purpose of the lake itself, many boaters, fishermen hikers, bikers and racers were left with swimming as the only option on the trails surrounding the lake.

Although there was a pre-race meeting detailing race changes mandated by the water levels, many teams failed to heed the new directions and found themselves swimming the last bike portion of the event, costing them precious minutes...even hours.

Yet, for some, the day was spent living an adventure regardless of the outcome and the joy on their faces as they crossed the finish line made the pain of the event worthwhile.  We thank those people who truly embraced the goal of adventure and rolled with the punches of the day and came out like champions...regardless of their finishing place.

We hope to see you next year...who knows what the weather has in store for us!
